An explosion is only the beginning of her problems…Morgan is finally back to work, having returned from her disastrous attempt at a vacation just in time to watch an accident cause a massive explosion on one of the other freighters. With the damaged ship out of commission it is up to the crew of STEVE – Morgan included – to frantically get the cargo transferred and depart more than a month ahead of schedule. But what Morgan doesn’t know is that the assassination attempts were only the beginning.Missed maintenance isn’t the only, or worst, danger lurking out in the black.

This third book continues the adventures of young Morgan as she unexpectedly gets promoted from 4th Lieutenant (basically an ensign) to 3rd Lieutenant aboard the massive armed merchant S.T.E.V.E.The action was well paced and I enjoyed the character development and overall storytelling. However, there were a couple of glaring (to me) discrepancies in the “reality” of the author’s fictional universe that caused me to subtract a star because, well, they were so darn obvious and nonsensical. I don’t mind plot devices thrown in to create suspense and drama, but at least be clever about it.Minor Spoiler Alert …First of all, the author goes into some detail about S.T.E.V.E., how it was one of the largest ships still flying anywhere. One of the last mighty gate-building ships from lost Earth and built as a combination warship and explorer, a massively over-engineered leviathan expected to go on unsupported missions lasting years. Several times he mentioned the multiply-duplicated systems throughout the vessel, explanations which made sense since the MC was trained as an engineer before getting set on a command track. And yet one micrometeorite impact in an unused part of the ship causes a coolant leak in the A/C system that makes the entire ship nearly uninhabitable due to waste heat buildup from the reactor. A micrometeorite impact so minor that while it punched a millimeter-sized hole in the hull and cracked a deck plate in an unused and closed off fabrication hold, the damage remained undiscovered for several weeks until the climate control system fell out of nominal. When the engineering crew finally discovers the damage it takes them less than a hour to repair it, but by then too much coolant has leaked out from the damage below the deck plate and been sucked out the pinprick hole into space. This after several pages where the author describes how overbuilt the ship was, how there were two entirely separate air-handling plants and the circulation system was distributed all over the ship …… Specifically so that significant damage taken in battle - rail gun fire that would hit with the kinetic energy of a small nuke - wouldn’t knock any vital systems totally off line! One cracked coolant line causes them to throttle the reactor back to near-shutdown and essentially turn off the ship and nearly have to abandon the mission. The designers who built so many backup systems into the ship wouldn’t have left such a simple, fatal flaw.If nothing else they’d have automatic shutoff valves at junctions throughout the coolant system that’d close in the event of a pressure loss to isolate the damaged area until it could be repaired, right? The other reality-disconnect is when the enemy seizes civilian and corporate ships, stations and mining facilities in the outer system, not all at once but piecemeal over the course of several months. Apparently no one realizes this is happening because the enemy “jams” all communications … Throughout the entire outer star system?!It’s beyond credulity that no one manages to inform the Navy or the government on the system’s home world that there’s an unknown enemy rampaging through the system seizing ships and entire stations.Even the lack of communication should’ve been a huge red flag for the authorities, whether it was due to the enemy’s miracle jamming or the fact that they were capturing everyone and imprisoning them.Flimsy reasons were given for why S.T.E.V.E. - a heavily armed multi-trillion dollar merchant ship - sailed unknowing into the enemy’s trap, but they were honestly unbelievable. All that aside, I like the MC and her take on life as she stumbles through it and look forward to the next book.If you enjoyed this series check out the April series and Family Law series by Mackey Chandler, the Families War series by Bruce Bretthauer, the Alexis Carew series by J.A.
